Mirabilite on the Great Salt Lake

One of the most unique features of Utah resides in the Great Salt Lake. You can only find mirabilite mounds in Antarctica, the Canadian Arctic, Spain, and the Great Salt Lake. Mirabilite formations have only been documented on the Great Salt Lake in the last five years, as water levels have lowered, exposing the salt substance to cold winter air, which causes the mirabilite to crystallize. These formations can only be seen in the winter. The one note of caution is they are highly sensitive and should not be walked on or disturbed.
